The flu: Cough, congestion, fever, body aches and pains, headache (particularly behind the eyes) and severe tiredness/ exhaustion.
The common cold is caused by a virus. Over 100 different viruses have been associated with the common cold however the rhinovirus is by far the most common. The flu (also known as influenza) is an acute respiratory illness caused by the influenza virus.
In addition to the pathogen (virus), significant causes of colds and flu include: Sub-optimal function of the immune system. Nutritional deficiencies. It is important to get colds and flu under control quickly to prevent them from developing into more serious conditions such as bronchitis and encephalitis.
Cod Liver Oil is a good source of vitamins A & D, both of which are important for the health of the immune system(1). Beta Carotene enhances immune status by increasing numbers of T cells.
Vitamin C reduces the frequency, duration and severity of the common cold. Vitamin C has antiviral and antibacterial properties.
Vitamin E enhances immunity particularly in the elderly. Zinc concentrations in and around the nasal cavity have been found to prevent the rhinovirus binding to cells thus preventing infection.
Garlic enhances macrophage and T-lymphocyte function as well as being antibacterial and antiviral(4).
Echinacea is immune modulating and enhancing. May help to reduce the duration of the common cold.
Astragalus reduces the duration and severity of symptoms associated with the common cold.
Andrographis has been found to decrease tiredness, sleepiness, nasal secretions, sore throat and muscular aches associated with the common cold in clinical studies. Olive leaf has anti-viral properties.
Elderberry reduces viral loads particularly of colds and flu.
The number one treatment objective for colds and flus should be to support/boost the immune system so that it is able to fight infection. Stress depresses immune function so avoid stressful situations and get plenty of rest. Not only does staying at home in bed allow your body to recuperate, it also prevents you passing the infection to others. Ensure you get the appropriate amount of sleep required for your body. Sleep is when the body heals itself.
Drink plenty of clear warm fluids to soothe your throat, keep you hydrated and assist in breaking down any mucous, e.g. soups, herbal teas etc. Eat light meals to ensure your body does not use up all its energy digesting food. Ensure that you consume a balanced diet with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables to provide you with a range of vitamins and minerals needed to fight the infection.
Increase consumption of the following as they have immune stimulating properties: Manuka honey, Shitake and Reishi mushrooms, garlic and onions. Consume plenty of soups, congees, broths and stews as they are good for building up the immune system.
Applying a heating rub or liniment over the chest often helps to loosen mucous. Avoid sugar, alcohol and cigarettes as they lower white blood cell activity thereby depressing the immune system. Avoid excessive amounts of dairy products as dairy is believed to promote mucous in the body.
A few drops of eucalyptus on your pillow or tissues may help with nasal congestion.
