Curcumin is the active component of Turmeric. Turmeric has a long history of use in Ayurvedic medicine as an anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic. These actions have been supported by studies that show anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic activity of curcumin.

Curcumin is the main active component found in Turmeric which has a very long traditional use in Indian Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine systems for many health conditions. Curcumin is very poorly absorbed in your body, so you'd normally need high levels for a medicinal effect. For years, researchers have been looking at novel ways to protect and deliver high levels of curcumin. The best curcumin is here; the award winning Meriva curcumin!
Turmeric vs Curcumin
Turmeric only contains small amounts of curcumin, around 3-5%, and high doses of curcumin are needed for a medicinal benefit, so sometimes you’ll see Turmeric standardised to around 95% of curcumin. At these high levels of standardisations, curcumin becomes the active ingredient instead of Turmeric.
Regular curcumin is poorly absorbed
It’s common knowledge that regular curcumin is very poorly absorbed in the digestive tract and is quickly metabolised and eliminated from your body. Curcumin is only slightly soluble in water and is rapidly degraded in the watery intestinal environment. Curcumin, as a fat soluble compound, is best broken down and absorbed with some form of fat to improve its availability. Interestingly, many cultures have traditionally used fats such as ghee, yoghurt and coconut milk when consuming Turmeric to help boost the bioavailability of curcumin.
Meriva® curcumin: 27 times more bioavailable than regular curcumin
Meriva® curcumin provides an innovative patented delivery system for curcumin that dramatically improves the absorption of curcumin. Meriva® curcumin has been shown to be 27 times more bioavailable than regular curcumin! Meriva® curcumin has been embedded into a phospholipid matrix. Phospholipids (a class of fat) are a major component of all your cell membranes, including those in your digestive tract. The phospholipid matrix protects Meriva® curcumin from the watery intestinal environment and takes advantage of the rapid exchange of phospholipids between your cell membranes and your digestive tract, providing superior curcumin absorption.
