Hair and Scalp

Like your skin, the condition of your hair is a reflection of your overall state of health. It may also be affected by exposure to the sun, heat and chemicals, and by hereditary or hormonal factors.

Symptoms

Hair that is damaged tends to be brittle, and to break easily. Split ends or dryness may give it a frizzy appearance. Texture may be dull and lifeless. Dandruff (white flakes in the hair or on the shoulders). Scalp may be itchy or greasy. Abnormal amounts of hair loss. In alopecia, hair may fall out in large quantities, leaving large sections of the scalp exposed, sometimes in circular patches (alopecia arreata), or in a more generalised fashion.

Causes

Hair is easily damaged by harsh chemicals (such as bleaches, dyes and chlorinated swimming pools), exposure to heat (e.g. blow dryers and hair straighteners), sun exposure. In most cases, dandruff is simply the sloughing off of skin cells from the scalp, made more visible because the shed skin becomes trapped in the hair. However, excessive quantities of dandruff may be due to an oily scalp, food allergy, seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, or the use of harsh shampoos. Similarly, everyone experiences a certain amount of hair loss every day. Many people are affected by hereditary hair loss patterns, and this too is considered normal. However hair loss may accelerate during time of hormonal fluctuation or stress.

Damage to the hair follicles (e.g. by persistently scratching the scalp or by using harsh chemicals or heat on the hair) may cause hair loss or make hair look thinner due to the broken strands. The cause of alopecia is unknown, but it often occurs after stressful events. In some cases, hair loss may be the result of underlying health problems (e.g. thyroid underactivity, fungal infection, anaemia) or occur as an adverse effect of a prescribed treatment (e.g. chemotherapy, blood-thinning medications). Dietary deficiencies of key nutrients, such as essential fatty acids, zinc and silica may also contribute to hair problems.

Nutritional & Herbal Solutions

To help maintain lustrous hair, take a vitamin and mineral formula that provides vitamins A, B5, B6, C, D3 and E and the minerals zinc, selenium and silica. Look for a formula that also contains biotin (a member of the B-complex group of vitamins that is essential for hair and fingernail health), and fatty acids from evening primrose oil and fish oil to help maintain the health and condition of the hair and scalp. Support your body's ability to cope with stress by taking a high potency multivitamin that provides the B-complex group of vitamins, vitamin C, magnesium and other nutrients that help combat nervous tension and anxiety.

Diet & Lifestyle advice

Unusual levels of hair loss may be indicative of underlying disease or hormonal imbalance, and require medical investigation. Make sure you eat a nutritious healthy diet with adequate protein, complex carbohydrates and fresh fruit and vegetables to ensure an adequate supply of vitamins, trace minerals, essential amino acids, and essential fatty acids for healthy hair. Don't use harsh chemicals on your hair, or expose it to high heat. Use a tea tree shampoo for dandruff that's specially formulated to gently and effectively control the condition while soothing a flaky and itchy scalp. To improve the health of the hair and scalp, try rubbing rosemary oil onto the scalp, or make a strong infusion of nettle tea, allow it to cool, and use it as a hair rinse after shampooing and conditioning. Coconut oil and jojoba oil may also be beneficial when massaged into the scalp.

Hair loss that occurs as a consequence of illness or its treatment can be very distressing; if necessary, seek counselling or other assistance to help you cope. A number of treatments and replacement options are available to help minimise or disguise hair loss.

If symptoms persist consult your healthcare professional. Information provided is of a general nature and should not replace that of your healthcare professional.
